This is one of the main entrances to Shiraz, Iran.
This taken in front of the arch shown below and facing in the opposite direction – towards the city of Shiraz.

Yes, Shiraz, where that lovely drop of red wine first came from. But do you think you can get a drop of that lovely wine in this parched land? Not on your Nelly. Being caught with alcohol or having had alcohol is punishable with 80 lashes……glad we waited until we got to the UK before we lashed out on some!

Alcoholic drinks can be bought in Iran – for a price! Most visitors probably won’t be able to buy it as it is mostly sold through friends of friends etc. Those caught selling it face the death penalty. It’s really best to wait until your visit is over and you can drink without the threat of severe pain (other than a hangover that is) hanging over your head.

great story.. I guess it’s like in prohibition time in the USA, people could always get what they want for a price. But lets not forget it’s a country w/o gays and alcohol.. :-) Thanks for sharing with the Art of the Middle East group

  • Thanks Eyal, yes, nothing untoward ever goes on in Iran! ;-)
