I want to hold your hand! by Bruce Dickson

Part of a series of ‘my first camera’ (Kodak era) shots taken in my youth.

The Fab Four miming The Beatles’ ‘I want to hold your hand!’ (with hand on end of long stick … get it?) and taking a pot shot at the new Beatle haircuts. ‘Moptops’ … as they were (later semi-affectionately) described after first being derided for their non-conformist and ‘revolutionary length’.

Digitalised from a Kodachrome slide image taken, circa 1963, of a Services Club-entered, parade float (either Apex or Rotary) … which was part of a festival procession cruising through the streets of a then sleepy central Queensland (sugar) cane town.

Beyond the ‘Beatle suits’, check out the country fashions of the time … some still evident today!

Simply respecting and celebrating life … in all its magnificent diversity … is nowadays the truly radical act of any artist.

It is no accident that one of the most significant ways of revitalizing the spirit and reconnecting with our deeper senses & more worthy selves is found in communion with nature and life itself … and in our power to imagine.

There is much that is wondrous to behold, value, defend and gain strength from.

Captures the times nicely, Bruce. I imagine those blokes would be beaten (beatled?) to a pulp if that was their real hair, in those conservative times, and especially in smalltown Queensland.

  • Think you’re right, was certainly the odd fab fight over ‘long hair’ back then. Ludicrous in retrospect and even ludicrous at the time Matt!
