Coast Redwoods in Humboldt Redwoods State Forest:
“I feel most emphatically that we should NOT turn a tree which was old when the first Egyptian conqueror penetrated the valley of the Euphrates .. into shingles.”
- President Theodore Roosevelt
The Coast Redwood (another Sequoia, a genus in the cypress family) is found along the northern Californian and southern Oregon coast and can reach over 300 feet tall and over 20 feet across, and be over 4,000 years old. The trees, also known as California Redwood, pass through three climate zones from ground level to canopy level.
The challenge: Find the human figure. ( Hint: Towards the center, above the ‘log’. Click ‘view larger’ if necessary.)
The carved graffiti on the tree trunk in the foreground represents some sad homosapien attempts to gain the same respect the trees already demand. ‘We were here’ ... but not for long.

Great. And I found the human figure, too!
Bruce Dickson replied
It is normally so hard to convey a true sense of scale with such gigantic trees, but for once that little figure seems to do the job. Great that you found it too.

This just reaches inside of me and takes hold of my soul! I am so glad I happened upon this wonderful image!
Bruce Dickson replied
It is so great you felt that way. Thank you for such a heartfelt comment. The photo seems deceptively ordinary in some ways until you see that lone figure among the giants. Giant redwoods in particular and trees in general (combined with their wider natural environments) possess such spiritual power … something able to be ‘felt’ and valued beyond even their vital ecological role. So, what sort of mentality sees only their shortlived dollar value and clearfells such treasures and the life depending on them … and sadly all around the world!
