I took this photo on the last day of operation for the Astroland Amusement Park at Coney Island. Opened in 1962 it closed its doors on September 7, 2008. The numbers hanging from the chains on the swing ride can be interpreted as a countdown for the last hours of the park. In the background the wooden Cyclone roller coaster is visible. Built in 1927 and declared a New York City Landmark in 1988, the Cyclone escaped the fate of Astroland and is still running after 85 years.
