For this piece I wanted to capture the entire expanse of the Main Concourse at Grand Central Terminal but taking a single shot with a wide angle lens would have resulted in a fisheye effect. To keep all of the vertical lines straight I broke the scene up into a grid and photographed it in sections. By using longer than standard exposure times I was able to enhance the color and show the movement of the commuters. I also made sure to include the recently restored astronomical ceiling originally painted in 1912. I took over fifty photos in all, which I then carefully combined to depict the entire scene seamlessly without any barrel distortion, and at such an extremely high level of detail that on large prints the train departure times can actually be read!
