DSM Art Festival Mural by Robert Reeves

DSM Art Festival Mural by

This mural is based on a 50″×20″ original oil painting I produced in April after several months of deliberations. The piece was then scanned and broken down into 1″×1″ squares. At the Art Festival visitors to the Interactive Mural tent were each given one of these squares and a 1ft x 1ft piece of masonite. There were no registration lines or guides to follow aside from the picture so each participant was at liberty to interpret their section of the painting in their own way. 1000 tiles were produced in this manner. I spent this last weekend assembling the tiles as they were being created. After nearly 20 hours the finished mural you see was completed. It stood in its finished state for 2 hours and was dismantled. It’s destined to become a permanent installation somewhere here in D4es Moines.
