Summer Boats

A beach in summer,
Sand is warm,
The waves roll in to meet the shore,
Here boats stacked high are waiting for,
Boys and girls whose arms are full,
Of reels and bait and fishing line

They take the boats out one by one,
Rowing out deep beneath the sun,
Bobbing on the surface of the sea,
Watch water dancing blue and green

They fish all day and have such fun,
’Til the moon comes out to chase the sun,
Then turning around they head for home,
To put the boats back one by one

The sun’s retired,
Sand is cool,
The waves roll in,
The beach now still,
The children will return tomorrow for more,
That’s what the boats stacked up are waiting for.

Summer Boats by

Another poem I wrote for my grandmother that was inspired by going to the wharf and seeing brightly painted dingy boats stacked up together.

I loved the simplicity in this….could really see the day from beginning to end. :)

  • Yeah, not sure how I envisioned this day – I’ve never been out fishing in a dingy!

Yeah – i like this one too :)

  • Yeah, I know, I know. You prefer my more extraverted side. Sniff… We should go do a shoot of these boats. They will still be there.

very good i can imagine the boats waiting

  • I actually took a photo of them to write the poem. Was about 4 years ago now. They really do look like they are waiting for something.
