This is from a series of Laundrettes around Melbourne (Australia). I wanted to look at, and document these places. They are slowly but surely disappearing, being renovated or re-developed into bars cafes etc. I am also interested in these spaces as they are one of the few areas where it is acceptable to be by ones self…no ones eyes are raised by someone sitting alone in a laundrette, as they can be when in a restaurant. There is also no expectation to engage fellow “washers” in conversation. The laundrette can be a place of solitude.

love the design aspect of this image – a frame within a frame so to speak… the ripped up vinyl really makes the shot, and how cool is that colour scheme!

The simple, straight fowardness of this shot makes it very appealing. NIce job!

This is a very nice picture purely from your point about the acceptability of aloneness in a laundromat. In years gone past, I spent quite a bit of time in one laundromat or another – it was often the only placfe I got to read my latest book without interruption!

They do seem to be a fast disappearing beast. This is well done.
