Tasmanian Brett Rogers is a nationally-published photographer who makes traditional film images in and around his home town of Hobart, Tasmania.

Unusually in 2014, Brett does not own a digital camera—with just a few exceptions, all images in his portfolio have been recorded with film equipment. As a result of his considerable repair skills and some canny buying, he has been able to amass an enviable collection of rare and desirable classic cameras at very low prices, by sourcing immaculate specimens in non-working condition and fixing them himself. Whereas many “collectors” are content to leave their collection in display cabinets, Brett’s policy is very much one of using his cameras because they can deliver such high quality results. They include classic models from Zeiss Ikon, Voigtlander, Rollei, Exakta, Mamiya, Minolta and many others.

Brett often works in the medium format because of its superior image quality. Although it’s hard to choose a firm favourite from his collection, he is particularly fond of his 1950’s Rolleiflex 2.8 twin lens reflex, but he also uses a Hasselblad SLR for much of his image capture because of its sheer versatility and unquestionable quality. 35mm also features strongly in his workflow—one of his Zeiss Ikon Contaflex SLRs are usually close to hand.

Black and white images are mostly captured on ILFORD film stock, usually Pan F Plus (ISO 50), FP4 Plus (125) or Delta 100. These are used because of their outstanding sharpness, extremely fine grain, and superior tonality compared to digital capture. Brett develops all of his own black and white films as well as many rolls for third parties. For colour imaging Brett prefers Fujichrome and Kodak film stock.

Brett also offers film processing services for Tasmanian film photographers, and can provide tuition in film photography—with 35mm or medium format equipment—for anyone interested in learning traditional photographic techniques.

See his Facebook Page for more information about how he can help you get started with film.

Zeiss Ikon Contaflex 35mm SLR

I use medium format because of the quality, and (in the case of the Rolleiflexes, also because they are gorgeous things and very choice). But I also like 35mm, because of the convenience, economy, and versatility, and because a lot of my 35mm stuff is cool, pretty, rare(ish) and delivers better quality than you might expect, anyway. / I’m a vicarious lover of film cameras and have examples made i…
