Book Stall, Salamanca Market, Hobart by

Hobarts historic Salamanca Place holds a weekly street market on Saturdays. Set amongst beautiful heritage-listed buildings and with Mount Wellington as a backdrop it must be one of the most atmospheric open air markets in Australia. Popular with locals and tourists alike, no visit to Hobart is complete without a trip to Salamanca Market.

I found this scene in February 2012. This particular photograph was taken with my Rolleiflex 2.8C twin lens reflex. The 2.8C model dates from circa 1955 and was a watershed model for Frank and Heidecke as it was the first Rolleiflex to be fitted with the legendary five element f/2.8 80mm Carl Zeiss Planar or Schneider Xenotar lenses of spectacular quality. My own example is fitted with the Xenotar f/2.8 taking lens. A 0.35 Tele Rolleinar (a Rolleinar is a Rollei factory close focus dioptre lens) was fitted for this shot.

The image was recorded on Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 black and white roll film in 6×6 format. I processed the film in ILFORD ID-11 developer at 1:3 ratio for 17 minutes at 20C.

I like the ‘old’ feel & look of this Brett. Nice work.

  • Thanks Odille, it was clear the black and white I had loaded in the Rollei would be a nice fit for the subject matter

Very sympathetic shot of old books! Your aunt C in Adelaide would probably appreciate this one, given her line of work!

  • Thanks…although I’m not sure how old some of the books may have been. I reckon the camera I took the photograph with might have been older than some of them. But they certainly looked the part at the time! I’d better arrange a print for her—I really miss her.

Brett, Thanks for submitting this one. Beautifully done, a real classic. The Salamanca Market must be fun to walk through on the weekends.

  • Thanks so much James, for that. It’s much appreciated. It would be lovely to take you through Salamanca one day if you find yourself down under.

This is lovely Brett – the lighting is particularly beautiful.

  • Hi Deb,
what a nice surprise to read this—thank you. I’ve been so pleased to see how much appreciation there is for your work, these last twelve months, but I confess, I have missed your presence on Red Bubble, so it is lovely, indeed, to log in this morning and find these kind words from you. I’m glad you like it.
PS I started a FB page for my photography recently, too—you can find it here
    Best,
    :)
