This image was published in a feature article about the restoration of Gretel II in Sails magazine October/November 2011 issue.
Another image from the series I did on or around the former America’s Cup challenger, during the 2011 Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart. 12 metre racing yacht Gretel II has a compass befitting her pedigree as seen in this shot taken in her cockpit (which also shows her port helm). New twin helms and winches with lashings of beautiful, marine grade stainless steel, as well as new decking, was installed in the course of an extensive refit in New Zealand by Dibley Marine.
More information about Gretel II may be found here.
Rolleicord Va medium format twin lens reflex camera fitted with a Schneider 75 mm f/3.5 Xenar taking lens. Tripod, cable release used. Image recorded on Fuji Neopan Acros 100 black and white roll film. Film processed in Ilford ID-11 developer 1:3.
It’s worth explaining that the use of a tripod for the cockpit shot worked quite well even though the boat was in the water. The conditions were calm, and as the tripod remained stationery relative to the deck sharpness in this image bears critical inspection well. I went to quite some pains to avoid marking her deck with the tripod feet, though. . .
