The Birth Of Psyche by Simon Groves

The Birth of Psyche
(Oil on canvas ~ 2.5 feet square.)

I have always felt that Aphrodite is Lakshmi, one and the same.

Goddess Lakshmi is the loving nurturer who brings us love and refinement and all good things that we need to survive and grow and enjoy the world we live in…and the spiritual side of life too, she delivers the results of our spiritual practices.

If we are starving it is She who brings to us a small bowl of rice..or even a single grain…anything we are lucky enough to receive is from her. All glory and thanks to Her! If we are bereft and desolate, it is Her that brings us a moments gratitude for anything good we can feel or find….She loves our gratitude and praise, yet, maybe, even our gratitude and praise of Her is delivered by her giving, in perfect time… such is the mystery of Her way.

Here she is giving one very great gift, the birth of Psyche!

What is “Psyche”?

Psychoanalysts and psychotherapists and psychiatrists are all dealing with “her” (the psyche) throughout their work…but do they all know what “psyche” is?

Psyche is not “mind”, so do the drug-toting professionals of mental health deserve to use her in their professional titles? The soul cannot speak of itself, not be interrogated…so do psychoanalysts deserve her name? And if the mind and mouth are encouraged to talk about feelings and problems and pain… can the Psyche really be said to be advocating herself in the work of “psychotherapists”? If we translate the word “Psycho” as used to describe dangerous persons, then I think maybe “Psyche” may feel wholly misrepresented.

There is clearly a modern misunderstanding and misuse of the word ‘psyche’.

I think a single individual spark of the overall universal creative intelligence…that which is a spark from “the core phenomena of all perfect unfoldment of life, unmanifest, in birth, and fully manifest” deserves to use the name “Psyche” for it’s true meaning is “individual Soul”. So maybe the Creator or “God” could be called “Super-psyche”? ~ Supersoul.

Perhaps a redefining of the need of psychotherapeutic patients may be needed. I am sure there are plenty of therapists who can guide a person to be in charge of their own life…but I can guess that many more of THAT kind are needed… I guess they would be “Guru-psychotherapists”.

The birth of Psyche, maybe it is a start to the recognition of the ‘silent one’..or biggest “Self”. The observer. And so, beginning of a conscious following of a truly spiritual path.

Thank you to my friends who supported and encouraged me to finish this project.

Thank you very much
Jaymasee at deviantart for her photographic help. Without you this project would have been impossible.

Thank you also to Fiona Jones a “redbubble artist” who offered the digital artwork to me for use in my oil painting work.

My work is eclectic, pychological and profound and hopefully, attractive and beautiful for hanging on your wall… or sticking on your iPhone as a case… enjoy!

Great vision, Simon… in your description you don´t mention the Psyche… but isn´t she an important part of this..(a goodess of soul, i guess)? …anyway, a beautiful painting!

  • Lena thank you , yes, I guess my psyche isn’t fully born yet… I must add this…now I am thinking on why I avoided writing about “The Birth of Psyche” I think maybe we are all giving birth to Psyche, not yet finished our labour? (s this a fair excuse or a reason??? Anyway I will write more, thank you! Lots of Love to you!

:) ..If you are you aware of it so it’s a excuse ..if not so, it is the reason… or so …..

  • Well…. The honest answer is that as I finished the writing, and immediately noticed I had not mentioned Psyche…I pondered, and saw it was an emotional chore for me to write words…. then my mind wandered… to something like “Dinner” or “Cookies” or something out the window. When my mind returned to the computer screen, I had completely forgotten about Psyche and clicked “Done and Done ~ Save changes”. So I avoided it by stealth….

So what now of my excuse? I plead confusion ‘Mi Lady’! I was aware of the whole action, and even as I closed the page..I realized (silently) I had avoided it…but I did not “think”…have I lost or found my psyche? (!)

Pshyche born out of the emotional waters.
It is there close to our recognizing as beings that are formed , created, individualized thanks to the emotions..and those, coming from relationship.
Thread of intensities, watery, earthly possesions, that are construing our Soul. Seed that accompanies our individual progression, with independence of what is going around, what others want for us, what intense submission is the group asking from us.
I love this depicting of the “Archetype”….lately I follow…read….feel a lot about “archetypal psychology”…James Hilman being the great Sun..the master. And I know what you mean with your words…
It it a real wonderful piece of art, incredible and perfectly done…I love it and cherish it.

  • Rosa, thank you, I love the way you feel for art and understand within your deep field of reference. I agree I felt my own understanding of “architype” when I was creating this “beauty”…. Thisarchitype for me, was “female” and “beauty”….. Beauty is a maddening subject, applied to the Earthly life, for beauty attracts a lover, and so some questions arrive for the ones seeking the super-Soul…who’s beauty is mind blowing.
