The next solstice is over two months away, but with record high temperatures in South Louisiana in March and early April of 2012, summer’s arrival is all but astronomically official. Along with it came a most prized visitation of the beautiful Summer Tanager. The first-year male posed for us Saturday, as if all the beauty in the world was a reflection of him. First-year males bear the colors of both adult genders, so we had quite a rush witnessing the species’ best palette. He splashed his way through a cool bath before leaving us for the day.
