My wife Sylvia and son Simon.
Simon is now 42 but I only got around to painting this last week – well, you mustn’t rush things. Can it really be so long ago since I was a proud new dad?

Brian, my friend, you remind me of those Japanese painters who meditate on the empty canvas and then get to work and speedily put their mental images onto the surface. You meditated on this portrait for 42 years and then did it in less than a week … ten out of ten for preparation ;)
For those who don’t know our daft sense of humour, I think this is a wonderful portrait, but I expect nothing less than wonderful from Brian anyway.
Brian Towers replied
Ta ever so Dave. Maybe I’m panicing as time gets short and trying to catch up on ‘jobs still to do’ I might even get around to painting the house I promised to do in 1947. I was going to join a group to cure my procrastination problem, but I thought I’d leave it until next week…or month.
Lora Garcelon
Ooooh! This is so beautiful!! I love how the skin glows.
mikeloughlin

Another master piece Brian….I know the feeling (not of creating a master piece:
)...I have son’s in their 40’s, and it sure does make you wonder where the time has gone :)dimarie
its so beautiful!
you can just see the love that has gone into this!
bit scary how quick they grow, my daughter is now 15months and it still feels like yesterday she was born, tho at the same time i cant imagine my life without her…
wonderful portrait Brian!
Brian Towers replied
Thank you Dimarie. You’re right, they grow up so quickly before you get your fill of enjoying each stage in their young lives. Fortunately the new stages bring new delights – until they get to be teenagers when some can bring a few wrinkles. We’ve now got a second chance to enjoy our offspring in the form of Simon’s son who is 16.
Take lots of photos of you little girl and enjoy every minute with her.

Magnificent & such a loving portrait
David Stuart
Beautifully painted Brian, must bring back some wonderful memories.

THE best portrait I’ve seen of yours Brian! How and when does the watercolor come into play?, however it does, it sure works!!
Brian Towers replied
Thanks my friend. I usually use watercolour to fill in the larger areas with base colour before using pastel and pencils. I use home-made felt pads as blenders to get smooth finishes. I’m still learning.
paul boast
beautiful work again Brian , just perfect, you improve all the time .
Brian Towers replied
Most kind of you Paul. I reckon I still have a lot to learn so intend to stick around for another 70 years. I see you are more into photography now and are producing some excellent work. Are you still doing any drawings.paintings?

Colin Cartwright
I wish my dad had been an artist. This will be priceless to them.
Astonishing talent, my friend. Your portraits are your forte, Brian.
How long did it take to paint this? (buH certainly not not 42 years!).
I’m currently working on four paintings -(a Thomas Hair, a JSS graveyard/abstract, a couple of trees, and Dracula’s castle) When I get sick of one, I fiddle with another!
You’ll see ‘em here soon.
Brian Towers replied
Hi Colin, When I eventually got down to it, it took about 5 to 6 hours. Oil’s would take a lot longer for me. Look forward to seeing your new works.
terry dunnett
Stunning work Brian – it doesn’t matter how long it took you to get around to it – you did and accomplished it so very, very well. I bet you couldn’t have put it together – or had the time – when you were a new Dad.
Well done.
Brian Towers replied
Kind and encouraging comments from a gent of your talents is greatly valued Terry. Hope all is well with you. Give us all a treat and show us more of your wonderful caricatures.
Marlene Piccolin
This is one of the best mother and baby portraits I have ever seen. She sure was a beautiful lady and he turned into a son anyone can tell you’re very proud of. Your whole portfolio is breathtaking, and I too hope you will be around a long time to paint many more pictures. Thanks for your comment on my work. It’s very flattering and confidence building to have someone of your caliber take notice. Thank you.
rightasrain
Yes, doesn’t time fly – my youngest is 21 and eldest heading for 30 in a couple of years. Brian, how did you mix the watercolour, pastel and coloured pencils? Did you do pencil first? Beautifully done!
Brian Towers replied
I think I was a bit intimidated when a youngster by those ‘experts’ who dictated so many rules about painting, but eventually I did my own things and largely ignored other people’s aesthetic restrictions. Now I use whatever works for me – sometimes that’s spilled coffee and and even talc. In this case it was base washes in W/C then pastel well blended and a touch of coloured pencils for detail. I’ll not mention sneezing on it, but it did improve it in parts. Many thanks again rigthasrain.
rightasrain
Hahahah, sneezing on it …...
There are so many rules re art …in the end, for me anyway, creativity is the key, sneezing or not ;-)
Brian Towers replied
Your work is never to be sneezed at.
Sean Farragher
brilliant
Brian Towers replied
Most kind of you Sean.
