PAINTING - BAMBURGH CASTLE.
I PAINTED THIS A FEW YEARS AGO – BEEN SCRUMMAGING THROUGH MY OLD STUFF. IT’S AN IMPRESSIVE CASTLE, BOTH IN APPEARANCE AND HISTORY AND PERHAPS THE MOST PAINTED BUILDING IN THE UK. THE CASTLE ITSELF IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND INCLUDES AN R.A.F. MUSEUM.
IT’S SITUATED ABOUT HALF WAY UP THE COAST OF NORTHUMBERLAND WHERE ONE CAN FIND SOME OF THE BEST BEACHES IN THE LAND. MANY FILMS HAVE BEEN MADE HERE.
OIL ON BOARD.

Tom Godfrey
such skill from the master. Well done sir Brian.
Brian Towers replied
Cheers Tom, your arts in the right place cheering up an old guy with such compliments. May the 4th be with you….or is it the 5th today?
retepk
Fantastic painting Brian. Fascinating place.
Cheers.
Brian Towers replied
You should have seen it before the cobwebs came off Retepk – your space scenes are a breath of fresh air my friend. Many thanks.
Linda Callaghan
wonderful painting Brian….lovely picturesque scene, would say peaceful too but I can hear the lawnmower! :-D ….loads of interest and of course history with the castle..reminds me of Cardiff Castle which is located in the middle of Cardiff City(where I come from)...this is perfect in every way.
Brian Towers replied
How very kind Linda. I guess I’m having to dig deep to keep up with you young artists in numbers as well as quality of work. Thank you.
BLYTHART
That chap is taking ages to mow the lawn :) This is a good painting. It would be nice to live in Bamburgh instead of Blyth … sigh.
Brian Towers replied
I tried a few times to finish this one and even then never quite liked it – too photographic I suppose. It’s yours for a couple of quid and a box of hobnobs. Ta my friend.
Laura Barber-R...
Beautiful paitning Brian, so summery!
Brian Towers replied
So nice of you to say so Laura.
Woodie
I love the calmness of this scene Brian,
It’s nothing like this in the height of Summer!!! B* Tourists everywhere.
I’ve painted this scene more that once.
Hope you are feeling better!!
Cheers Neil
Brian Towers replied
Many thanks Woodie and yes I’m hoping to get to the club this week as things are easing and I even sneeze without yelling or blowing a gasket now. I hope your Rita is doing as well my friend.
Yes, Bamburg Castle (as I once heard a tourist call it) is a gem for artists, especially from it’s back side, if you’ll pardon the expression. When are we going to see some more of your excellent art on rb Neil?
BLYTHART
I actually think it is really lovely.
Brian Towers replied
As are you for saying so my friend – everybody’s my friend today. (I’ve been watching too much Bob Ross) May the 4th go with you Dave.
GEORGE SANDERSON
Your rendition of this makes my drawings look like very amateur !
great painting, Brian
I was an extra in the film, Macbeth which was shot in bamburgh in the 70’s. i was a soldier in chainmail with a wooden sword and shield !!!
Brian Towers replied
Hey, a friend of mine was an extra in that film too so I guess you’re war veterans. I’d love to see photos of you in your chainmail George. And I always measure artwork as how much enjoyment one gets out of it by the way. I have often looked at other’s work and felt I was pretty pathetic, but then stopped caring and got back to enjoying it. You enjoy your work more than most.
Kate Eller
Naaaaaa…...Too photographic!!?? I was just going to say….Looks just like a photo. I like photographic….It’s beautiful. What’s a hob-nob?
Brian Towers replied
Maybe best not to ask Kate, but around here they are a make of biscuit, hard and not too appertising. Dave and I stop each other visiting by threatening to lay on coffee and hobnobs (my coffee is as bad as the biscuits). The alternative Gypsy creams were much better but only for best. It’s all an ‘in joke’.
Colin Cartwright
A familiar sight for me, and a wonderful and historic place. The climate is the only thing which stops the hordes of tourists. This is such a fine painting, and in your clear, clean style, Brian, with lots of straight and pure lines. My shaking hands always revert to impressionism in my painting!
Brian Towers replied
Thanks so much Colin and I’m pleased you’re still using your skills in painting, even with shaky hands.
My main fault – and I have too many – is not being loose enough. I’ve never been able to master the impressionistic style, but tend to get drawn into detail a little too much. Having said that, I prefer detail to some extent, but it’s time-taking and too photographic for my satisfaction. Also, I like some of Bob Ross’s fast and effective ‘tricks’ (paintings finished in half an hour). Cheers Colin.
Lensman2008
Nicely presented, even down to the man with his Flymo, mowing the grass.
Brian Towers replied
Thanks Lensman. Very nice of you to say so. The mower man got the sack and has been put out to grass.
David Stuart
The open space leading to the castle frames it beautifully.
Lovely work as always Brian. You big bundle of talent.
Brian Towers replied
Many thanks David. You big bundle of flattery.
roseart
What a magnificent painting Brian! All of your work is just awesome!
Brian Towers replied
A lovely consolation when coming back from holiday to find your comments Rose. You’ve made my day, thank you.
madvlad
nice art work great history there with lots of ruins—and great art by you
Brian Towers replied
Many thanks Madvlad, I greatly appreciate your comment.
AlienVisitor
I see your still around, just older.
Always a pleasure to view your work, both old and new.
AV
Brian Towers replied
Guess that goes for both of us AV. Been a bit busy with caricature commissions lately so neglecting landscapes and space scenes. I’ve got plans though….helps to keep me around for a bit longer.
Thanks my friend.
Hopebaby
Very nice work master.
Brian Towers replied
Coming from a ‘master’ like yourself that is indeed a compliment.
