SISTER MURIEL
No, she’s not a nun, but my sister I haven’t seen in many years due to her living in Australia. Thought I’d do a quicky portrait as an exercise…and to show her tan.

Brian she is beautiful!
Brian Towers replied
Thanks Mick. She’s 83 and still in pretty good condition – must be all that Aussie sunshine.
coffeetea
great image and portrait!!
Brian Towers replied
Most kind of you to say so.
Jim Phillips
What a beautiful lady. Excellent work getting the grays and flesh tones just right. Really nice details, like the light reflections on her glasses. Just a very well done portrait Brian.
Brian Towers replied
Thank you Jim. I can’t say this is one of my better pieces, but I’m still learning after 70 years pracising. I think portraiture is the biggest challenge in the art world and an exciting exercise.
pat oubridge
This is so beautiful Brian…..xxxxxx…......luv Pat
Brian Towers replied
As are you my lovely. Thank you. Hope you’re keeping well Pat.
Colin Cartwright
Superb pastel painting portrait, Brian.
The skin tones and hair are excellent. And the addition of a hint of reflection in the glasses, works great.
Brian Towers replied
Thanks Colin. I hadn’t put much up on RB for a while so I decided to get off my backside and busy myself. Mentioning glasses, I kinda like them as it gives some hard detail and reflections to get your teeth into.
coolart
A lovely sparkle in the eyes Colin well done
Brian Towers replied
Lovely of you to say so Rebecca. I always leave the most satisfying bits to do until last…..those highlights. I’m Brian by the way, but I get mixed up myself too.
Biker
Oh, that’s really good. The highlights are particularly effective, makes the whole image come alive. Nice work Brian.
Nice = Incredible!
Brian Towers replied
Thanks Biker. It ain’t easy, but I do like portraiture as a challenge. I must say though that I’d very much like to have your free drawing skills.
Woodie
Lovely portrait Brian!!! Great skin tone!
Brian Towers replied
Ta Neil….and this really is my sister this time. Actually she’s lived in the sun all her life and has rather more wrinkles, but I had to be kind.
Hidemi Tada
excellent work Brian. eyes and teeth are so real.
Brian Towers replied
Many thanks Hidemi

wow. I love the sublte “experience” lines :) and the colour balancewell done master.Brian Towers replied
Good on yer mate! I haven’t seen any of your wonderful creations lately Tom. I guess you’ve been busy – or perhaps lazing in the sun. Whichever, hope we’re going to have some treats soon.
davpea1
wonderful work my friend, wonderful.
Brian Towers replied
Hi Dave and thanks for that. I must say that I keep going back to look over your work and it is inspiring me to do more space art.
coolart
Ops so sorry Brian thanks anyway for letting me know still like the painting
Jim Phillips
Brian, I couldn’t agree more with your reply. I know as far as my own artwork it’s the weak link and I challenge myself regularly to try and improve upon it.
Brian Towers replied
Ah, but isn’t that the magic of our great hobby Jim, always finding new challenges and new things to learn? I reckon the pleasure one gets when things go well is priceless.
Teleis
nicely done! That hair looks so soft…..
Brian Towers replied
Thanks Donna. For 83 Sis is in pretty good shape both in body and mind.
BLYTHART
You’ve done a great job on the spectacles.
Brian Towers replied
I tend to think spec’s are part of the features of most wearers and they give me an excuse for sticking in those sparkles I like so much.
Many thanks Dave.
Walter Colvin
You are a master Brian,
Brian Towers replied
I still have a long way to go Walter, but with your encouragement I’ll keep trying.
Linda Callaghan
hello Muriel – i cant do portraits – this one is lovely…she looks such a nice lady..love the detail…wonder where she lives in Australia …as I live here too!
Brian Towers replied
Thanks Linda. Muriel has lived most of her life in Argentina and the last 25 or so in Perth suburbs. We visited her about ten years ago and were most impressed with all we saw. While it’s snowing here, I must say I don’t fancy your heatwave at the moment. Hope you’re coping well.
GEORGE SANDERSON
Absolutly Brilliant work Brian.
I saw the original on Friday and was amazed by the skin tones.
I agree with Walter, you are the MASTER !!!
Brian Towers replied
Thanks George. I still find portraiture a bit of a challenge, but an interesting one. It’s best when the lighting is unusual which isn’t the case when working from most photos. See ya Friday, if we can get through the snow.
Linda Callaghan
not too bad where we are Brian thanks….bit cooler in the mountains if you can call high 30’s cool! :-D
David Stuart
Wonderful vibrant piece Brian. Nice to see you off your lazy back side and using your vast talents.. all for our viewing pleasure. :)
Brian Towers replied
Many thanks David. Not too lazy really. While I’ve been busy with caricatures and not putting much on here, I think there is still a problem with RB in that our images are not getting to all those members who have us on their watchlist. My lastest one, a dog, seems to have got itself lost out there these last few days. When are we going to see more of your cartoons?
roseart
What a wonderful portrait of your sister Brian! Your highlights are spectacular! And her TEETH! OMG! Being a portrait artist myself, I know how difficult it is to master teeth!
Brian Towers replied
I agree with you about the teeth Rose. What looks fine in a photo tends to look like tomestones when painted. Same with wrinkles (laughter lines), they can so easily be overdone, although not so bad when the subject is old guys like me. Thank you for your kind comments.
