Fisherman and his dog

Brian Towers

Fisherman and his dog

This is a mixture of watercolour and pastel and is of the Wansbeck, a local river where we spent most of our childhood – a time of wartime restrictions and no home entertainment beyond board games. In those days we fished for food rather than sport. Regardless, it was great fun.

Fisherman and his dog belongs to the following groups:

Dear Mr Teeth…or can I call your by your first name, Muscular. Thanks for calling me a friggin genius. I’d settle for just genius but don’t take myself that seriously – and I’ve still got a lot to learn. But I’m always happy to get a bit of encouragement to keep me trying so thanks a lot,

Brilliant Brian really, really like it a lot . the colours are fab!! and the dog is very much like my Tuck did you borrow him while I wasn’t looking. I have been missing your work thought I had you on my watch list think someone came and pinched it while I wasn’t looking. My you have been hard at work!!

  • Brian Towers replied

How kind of you Alice. Honest, I didn’t dognap your pet, but they are a lovely breed. Can’t leave anything lying around these days, they’re even pinching watchists now. Hope you’re still busy enjoying producing those wonderful works of art.

  • Colin Cartwright

A lovely little Northumberalnd river (along with the Coquet at Rothbury).
Love the combined media here, Brian.
Simple, beautifully lit, and the autumnal hues, add an atmosphere of tranquility.

  • Brian Towers replied

Thanks Colin. Yes I think we have a lot going for us up in this part of the country – not too crowded for a start – but also some great variety of scenery. I found a long time ago that mixed media can often get me out of a problem, particularly a touch of patel over watercolour. We’ll worth a try – and it can be brushed off in not successful.

    Hi there Brian,

It was so hard choosing which painting to comment on, because all the work on display in your gallery is really outstanding. I think your work is fantastic.

    Well done,

    Keep it up,

    Regards,

    Rory

  • Brian Towers replied

Hi Rory and thanks for your kind comments. Once a portfolio get to be a few pages long it isn’t often that members get to see the earlier ones, so it was very complimentory of you to ‘dig deep’.

Just going off now to have a good look at your photography. Regards, Brian.

Lovely atmospheric work Brian – makes me misty eyed about my youth fishing in the Swale River in Yorkshire ( It was always soooooo cold !) – love your work mate.

  • Brian Towers

    Brian Towers

...as much as I love your work Terry – we don’t see enough of it and it’s always a favourite of mine. So, you’re a Swaledale lad – can’t do much better than that for a start in life.

  • terry dunnett

    terry dunnett

Brian I’m a Suffolk lad actually – but my folks lived up in Yorkshire for a while – lovely countryside, which you capture so well.
Busy with commissions but I’ve got a few ‘celeb’s’ on the production line. Watch this space – I mean my bit over there !!

  • Brian Towers replied

Every time I click onto RB I’m looking out for more of your creations Terry. When I first did caricatures (I found the kids responed to them when teaching) I worked hard at ‘real’ caricatures – the exageration of features. I never got anywhere near what you do so well and feared I might insult some people in the process. So now I play safe and try to do the straight portrait, hence Portoon. I always marvel at your genius.

I want to walk into this one and disappear… =8^)

    do more…!

  • Brian Towers replied

Hi Nate and thanks for your comments – coming from an artist like you makes them so much more valuable. I spend a long time looking at the detail and great artwork in your cartoons – got to be the best I’ve ever seen – every one a favourite. Can I ask what medium you use – looks like watercolour at it’s best?

  • Nate Owens

    Nate Owens

    Thanks, Brian.
Since the middle ‘90s, I have been doing the art all digital.
Painter, Photoshop, wacom pen tablet…. some of the older pieces in the gallery at my web site are done with oil and acrylics.
I reminisce sometimes about oils, until I remember the cleanup, drying time, shipping hassles – not to mention cat hair in the work (extra added secret ingredient).
    Maybe I’m a sellout, but I can’t say I have any regrets.

  • Douglas Hunt

the atmosphere in this painting is very relaxing. A lovely piece of work. The lighting is excellent on the branches at the top left and the eye is drawn in to the background. I love it.

  • Brian Towers replied

Very kind of you Douglas, thank you.

  • EnPassant

    EnPassant

Love your selection of colours in this one Brian. It confirms my belief that fishing is as much about the experience as it is about the catch. Incidentally, the frenzied thrashing about that you associate with golf… I associate with the aftermath of unsuccessfully trying to understand the setup programs of some makes of digital equipment,,, even when the English is OK!

  • Brian Towers replied

I’m with you there about the ‘instructions’ on some hi-tech equipment these days En. After all the wonderfully clever stuff they can put into computers, they then can’t write some easy-to-follow tutoring and one has to go out and buy an ‘Idiot’s’ guide book. What does that do to your ego!
Incidently, your excellent illustration of Long John having a golfing stroke shows no parrot – I guess he didn’t get a birdie.

    Many thanks for you comment.

  • Kirbo

    Kirbo

    Great !

  • Brian Towers replied

Thank you Kirbo. It’s always a delight to discover an artist I haven’t seen before on RB, and, having just looked through your portfolio, I am very impressed with your painting. I like both you main styles, that very loose technique of your nudes and the more detailed work of the portraits etc. I look forward to seeing more now you are on my watchlist.

thank you Brian…I am trying to do a painting a week – that is the only way I will improve (well if I can) working things out for myself but I do enjoy painting. Can be frustrating at times as I know I need to learn a lot but no time to do it. I will forever paint now and so happy I found redbubble and the special people, like you, on here! keep on painting my friend.

Airforce RAF.. did you spent time in 2ATAF in Rheindhalen/Germany ?

  • Brian Towers replied

Sorry John but somehow your kind comment got past me without me catching it. Got to admit to being in the RAF for only my two years National Service and got nowhere beyond a busy signals section in southern England – never worked so hard in my life and never saw a plane. I’d put down to go virtually anywhere abroard but didn’t make it, not even to Rheindhalen. Many thanks John, just off to look at your work.

nice of you to return notes and happy you did not mind my bad? faulty towers joke on sat here, on t v it was brit night and i never missed=are you being served! my late wife loved it, me tooo and others too,,boy we are old haha i,m 75 too,and if you taught 30 years, yes you must have a moment of angst, off and on,30 years in school and not killing a student or two, gear and tee,s yah heaven if its there, yes i do think your art is one of the most peaceful collected painting i,ve seen in a while, my art is full of’ “lord”, collected life of,? tornado,s and extended moments of pure joys, i guess? you taught art?and sorry you did not get your girls, yes they are all sugarfrom zero till about 14,after that is lots of worry and heart aches, but ,we scared our mom,s n dad,s too?yes i loved seeing the old air planes too i was on a air craft carrier in 51-54 so ihad lots of time to enjoy seeing war planeslive!, but the p40-p-51 and all the others i had down perfect—again thanks for you comments, hope you have a good day and like me keep throwing paint till the boss shows up , for our next assignment?, pax

  • Brian Towers replied

Thanks for the message Madvlad – sounds like we’ve both had a few interesting experiences during our 75 years….with lots more to come hopefully.

I never take myself too seriously and reckon one of the ingredients of long life is a good chuckle; and that’s what I got from you Fawtly Towers joke. That and other TV comedy shows of that time were far funnier and in much better taste than those today (not the swearing they substitute for humour now). I know what you mean about kids getting to the awkwardness of mid-teens, both girls and boys and how I lost my hair with worry at times.
I taught in a regular schools here but not art – might have killed my interest – I was in wood, metal and technology workshops. Oddly some girls were better than boys at using tools with skill when we went co-ed.

Glad to have met you, even if it is only via rb, but that’s what the club is about, being friendly and encouraging to each other.

    Regards Brian.
