Barb's mom, young and old.

Barb's mom, young and old. by Brian Towers

Barb's mom, young and old.

A bit tricky to get this composition right,. I’m not sure I did, but I hope it does the trick for Barb.

Acrylic ,oil, a touch of pastel and coloured pencil. You can’t get much more of mixed media than that I guess.

Barb's mom, young and old. belongs to the following groups:

Well I think you did. This is a beautiful work Brian. I amazed how how kept the character lines in her face without making them just look like wrinkles. It is a very complimentary work. Excellent job.

When we look at a row of TV’s in a store they often show big differeneces in colour, contrast and definition; it’s the same with computers so what we see on ours might not corrorlate with others. But I do agree that in this case the image is too pink compared with the original. I’ll try to match up the photo with the painting and send it to you again Barb.

A master stroke is something I’m hoping to avoid Tom, but thanks for the generous ego-boosting comment.

The arrangement is visually striking. The semi transparent, young profile, is especialy effective as a background.
This is like a photoshop image using layers. Except it’s created the hard way – which requires talent!

Very fine work, Brian. I think you excel most at the portraits.

Brian Towers in reply to Colin Cartwright’s comment, 5 months ago

I’ve got to confess to using Adobe and layers to plan out and see how the finished thing might look, but the finished aritcle is all paint and sweat. Actually, Colin, I often take a photo of an unfinished painting and use computer wizardry to see what various figures and changes might look like before committing to paint. Thanks for your very generous comments, and hope things are going well for you.

Beautiful work Brian! You got it just right!! Back portrait “is” background and does not compeat with the fore. But still adds to the depth of the work!

Thanks Arthur. I suppose I just fish around for something which works best regardless of what medium. But isn’t it great to experiment? I first did that years ago when bringing back some lights by using pastel on watercolour – been doing it ever sinse.
