Brettus 2009

Brettus 2009

Black pen on photocopy paper.

Coloured in Adobe Illustrator.

The fourth in my series for the Happy challenge.

At the moment a lot of things seem to be clicking into place making me feel quite chuffed with life.

I would pretty much rate myself at 9 out of 10 for happiness in 2009.

This is as close I can get to real colouring in Illustrator, including my permanent Homer Simpson 5 o’clock shadow.

I think I’m gonna work on this over the next week or so and do some digital colouring to make a few different versions. I’ll upload them all as they are created. The one with the most favourable comments will be my final entry.

So please, all feedback would be very welcome.

I saw Stefan Sagmeister give a lecture at my university about 4 years ago and it was quite inspirational. His work is awesome and it’d be wonderful to be a part of anything he created!

This has made me smile, Not sure if you are happy but I am a little bit more from seeing it.

  • brettus replied

Thanks Pilgrim!! I am definitely happy, even though it doesn’t necessarily look it in the illustration. The picture probably looks about a 5.

Brett, i love the calm colours and the light upon your face, a really lovely look….i see you daydreaming and really in a place of peace and quiet content. Absolutely representative of a 9….for me, this is the one. I love the others also, but these are my favourite calming colours of the ocean, it’s fresh, alive and beautiful…congratulations – great work!

Thanks Karin! Your feedback really means a lot! It’s definitely gonna stay my entry in the challenge now : )

hey im honored you like my work, though i think your a damn site more talented than i.

  • brettus replied

Ha! You’re just being too modest now : ) But seriously, I think “artists” are always most critical of their own work and self worth. There is ALWAYS someone a lot more talented than any particular individual, eh?

out of the three, definitely my favourite. more powerful i think. very alive. very good rendering of lights and shadows. i wish i could draw ;-)

  • brettus replied

Thanks Sonia. I used to draw a lot, but recent years has seen me become a slave to the computer. This is actually the first freehand drawing I have done for quite some time – no sketches, just straight up pen on paper. The closer I got to finishing it, the more scared I was that I was going to cock it up . . .

well that just proves how talented you are, no practice and you haven’t lost it he! that’s the thing with computers, we take less risks – cock up, apple Z… cheers to your courage, hope you get featured in Sagmeister’s work ;-)
