Colour Management HELP by Brett Still

In need of help

I recently started viewing my images on different monitors and was shocked at the difference in colour’s. I knew there would be some difference but it got me thinking. If I’m editing my images so they look good to me on my monitor how do I know how they are going to appear on everyone else’s monitor’s and if someone just has their monitor on a default setting out of the box the result could be completely disastrous especially with contrast and brightness as well.

So I ask this question what advice would you give to prepare your images for redbubble knowing that they could appear different to everyone?

And as an extra to this how do I know that my monitor is giving a true represetation of colour? Or is there no true in the sense of the word and its just what looks nice?

Colour management really confuses me and I want to learn how I know that I’m getting the right colours.

Brett I’ve seen some lengthy discussions about this on RB in the past – but can’t think where!!! If I find them I’ll let you know – it is a problem and even if we buy a special equipment to check the calibration as professionals do, we still have no idea how other people’s monitors show our work. (I also found my images were being printed by RB darker than they appeared on my screen, so I now lighten by 20 before I upload to RB!). I’m not much help but I can sympathise with you!

  • Brett Still:

Any help is great help. The tip about the redbubble printing is a good one. I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you.
