On a recent trip to Marysville I visited a street I used to pass by just to find it completely empty.
Despite all the information about Marysville nothing prepared me for the shock of actually seeing the entire town gone. It was heart wrenching to see it not there.
I felt like an intruder coming from “the city” to take some photographs, but I thought I had to do it.
I have many shots, but I wanted to share these first.

I hope the numbers represent well what I had in mind for this series.

The town is being rebuilt and people seem to be optimistic about the future.

I must however mention something that disturbed me about Marysville rebuilding.
It seems as if we, as humans are not as clever as we think ourselves to be. Mostly, the new houses are being built in weatherboard or brick veneer. Both inefficient, uncomfortable to use, energy hungry construction, with close to zero fire resistance. There was a chance to research and rebuild using energy efficiency, fire proof materials and set an example and a new standard for the rest of the world. Instead, we are going to have a quaint copy of a IXX century rural Britain… again.

fantastic series- perceptive, thought provoking, melancholy.
