Restraining Children

On Friday it will be two years since my mother died, and John and I were reminiscing. John said, “Where did they get the leash? Did other people keep their children on leashes?” I said I didn’t know. I’ve never heard of anybody else doing it. We discussed whether it might have been a dog leash.

John said that he remembered a crib but he certainly didn’t remember a leash.

Others used them. My mother used leashes on my brother and I when we were young to stop us from suddenly run onto the road and in front of a car as youngsters don’t bother checking if any are coming and also so that she wouldn’t lose us when shopping. Also deterred strangers from just grabbing hold of us and taking off :)

Thank you C J! I’d never heard of anyone else doing it. Your mother was taking good care of you.

George was on a leash. He told me that it was not uncommon,
in late 40s Europe. Now he is an old fogey, but, I might have
been tempted to kkep him on a leash thirty years ago…;-)

Hi DainnV, it’s good to hear from you! Retired now, are you? Another confirmation that my parents were not just using a dogleash! (The year was 1948.)
