The Cathedral of Intercession of Theotokos on the Moat, popularly known as Saint Basil’s Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral erected on the Red Square in Moscow in 1555–1561.The building’s design, shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, has no analogues in Russian architecture: "It is like no other Russian building. Nothing similar can be found in the entire millennium of Byzantine tradition from the fifth to fifteenth century…‘’ is a quote from Wikipaedia. I have shots of this amazing church from every possible angle and it’s beauty on the outside is unsurpassed. Stunning architecture ~ how wonderful to see this in person .. great capture and detail :)
Yes it was – spent some time in Red Square over two days – inside the Kremlin, Lenin’s tomb and the wonderful churches. This one is so colourful – thank you for lovely comment.
What an unusual and amazing structure. I have seen many photos of just the domes but never the entire building. Well done Liz.
Have some from the side – I may upload these later – you get a little curve at the length and height though – straight on was a better shot. Thank you very much.
So intricate and colourful, could have come straight from a fairytale
Yes, it could Felicity – this one and the Church of the Spilt Blood in St Petersburg(uploaded ages ago) were similar in many ways- St Basil’s is more colourful though. Thank you
