Just like the crossing of the zebra in Kenya, but the noise was magnified ten times. There were thousands of wildebeest lined up on the embankment on this section of the Mara in Tanzania. They had paced around the whole day the previous day and then one jumped in at 7 am and as our camp was set not 5 minutes away we watched for over an hour as they poured across. I would love to show a series of shots I took, but this one gives a slight insight into the numbers at that moment. Some were crushed with the stampede into the water, adults as well as babies. The crocs, vultures and storks had a feast day, horrible! The delight when they crossed was fantastic, almost brought tears to your eyes, the babies called on their mothers , some turning to go back in the melee. The filled the side we were on in their hundreds and got the greener pastures. An unforgettable scene.
Just a point to note, this was not long after dawn and the mist was swirling up the river towards us., but it is much lighter on my screen.
