Endless Scree Trail

Endless Scree Trail

This was taken when riding in Peru last year – we came to this scree slope which we had to cross to continue down to where you see the river in the distance – there was a glacial loch just over the rise. We had already ridden for 4 hours without a rest as the slopes were too steep and the trail too narrow to stop. The slope to the left was very steep – and the scree slope was unstable. One of the horses slipped but the rider held on – we eventually stopped at the top of the next crest ( we couldn’t dismount as there was no turning space!! ) before we descended – only to climb again – this was the day we rode for over 8 hrs and I took the photo of the shadows (in my portfolio) with the setting sun. A quite unforgettable day amid the towering Andes.

    Beautiful view !!!

  • Braedene replied

I think we kept watch that the horses’ hooves were sure footed enough to save us from plunging down that slope!! The spectacular views we took in at stop points!! It was an amazing experience and adrenalin packed. thank you.

Thank you so much Sandy. The ‘end of the day’ was a long way away but the ‘shadows’ shot (in my portfolio)was taken about half an hour before we reached our new campsite.

Fantastic scenery and it sounds like a hair-raising and tiring ride. I’ll bet you could hardly walk when you finally got off!

Awesome and exciting to see this picture. Can’t even begin to imagine how exciting it was to be on that narrow trail. I can imagine it was a very good lesson in trusting the surefootedness of the horse!!!

  • Braedene replied

Total trust – there was one time – at about 14000ft – when the horse had to manoeuvre a right angle bend on the foot wide trail and there was a 2000ft drop on the left side !! I did send up a little prayer of trust in my horse. The horse was named after the last Incan chief, Manco Inca, and my prayer was that my horse would not be the last Manco Inca horse !! We got round that bend on a pivot of its 4 hooves!! Thank you Jane.
