The Great Jaguar Temple
We drove in to Guatemala, to Tikal, where the Mayan civilisation had 130 000 Mayans in this one area. Known just now is that the civilisation lived from around 700BC to about 650 AD. This is one of the 6 temples and many houses that are round the Grand Plaza. It is 47 m in height and has nine layers, which makes it stand out amongst the rest, but it is not the tallest at the Plaza as one temple is 70 m. The body of the leader Jasaw Chan K’awiil was found inside in a tomb. No one knows how or why the Mayans disappeared but there are many theories. The jaguar is the noted animal for Belize and Guatemala.

Hi Liz, its been a while:) Great capture! Love the shadows in the front and the great lighting on the temple. Blue sky behind really makes the temple the attention. Beautiful shot! Thanks for the description as well , very informative!
Braedene replied
Hey thanks Nathan – what a wonderful comment – perfect day for pics. I took one of this temple again when I climbed up about 40 m to the one opposite it – makes you realise how they felt building such high structures. nearer to God am I – etc!! Liz

Al Bourassa
What an amazing people they were.
Braedene replied
Yes, they were Al- how they built these heights without machinery was astouinding – like the Incans/Egyptians etc they definitely were brilliant at Maths and the knowledge of the heavens. The sun rises exactly over one on the solstices and exactly over one on the equinox- . You can’t believe the accuracy these ancient peoples had. Thank you

Lisa Jones
Wonderful capture Liz!
Braedene replied
Thank you Lisa – this one was nearly perfect. All the hills around had temples/ structures underneath tons of earth/ trees, but it takes millions to properly excavate – so the next few generations will see ‘new’ structures emerge if they get funding . New knowledge too as they have broken the code of their heiroglyphics. Liz

Congratulations for your tour and for pictures, memories. I feel the same. When I see one good nice place, I try to enjoy so much as I can and make so many ühotos as I can.
Traveling and photography are belonging together. Same time I write for newpapers, poetry and so on. Even books.
