This is an inside shot of the beautiful St Brelade’s parish church at the end of St. Brelade’s Bay, Jersey, CI. It is a lovely building with a fascinating history. The date of when St Brelade’s church was originally built is unknown, but it is mentioned in deeds of patronage. In AD 1035, Robert of Normandy confirmed the patronage of the church to the monastery of Montivilliers, which shows that the church was here before then.
The oldest part of the church is the chancel which extended some six feet into the nave. It was only a small monastic chapel at this point. It wasn’t until the early 12th century that it became a parish church, and additions were made. In the 14th–15th centuries, the roof was raised about two-and-a-half feet higher to a Gothic pitch.
The church of the 12th century was cruciform in structure, consisting of a chancel, a nave (built in two periods) and two transepts—the latter forming the two arms. Nearly a century later, the chancel aisle was built, followed by the nave aisle. Nearly all the stone used in the building of this church came from the beach; limpet shells can be noted on the stonework. Before the restoration of the church building in the 1890s, the whole of the interior stone work was covered in whitewashed plaster. The plaster was removed to show the granite, and the whole of the ceiling and building was re-pointed with cement. Legend tells that the church was built to stand in the centre of St. Brelade’s Bay, but was moved by night by fairy folk away from their sacred site to where it now stands, until the workmen got the message and left it where it now stands. Gorgeous picture!
Thank you David! What a wonderful compliment. It is a lovely church building. I just popped in for a moment after taking some outside shots. I was running late and had to get back to the hotel. I was going to spend more time inside, but I had to wait for a wedding to finish and by the time it did, time was running scarce. I look forward to returning with more time to capture the beautiful inside of this historical church.

Great shot mate. Lovely use of the lighting in the church.
Thank you my friend. It’s a really marvelous structure. We’ve been to a service here several times, and it gets full quickly. The uplighting on the ceiling is on a timer that you push on when you walk in the door. I had to find the angle I wanted and then go and push the timer so that I could get the shot. I appreciate the compliment my friend. You should visit Jersey. It is really amazing there.
