Artist's Description

It was the end of our holiday in Northumberland, England, and we were on our way home. I decided to pull off the A1 at the exit for Alnwick. I wanted to see if I was able to get a decent shot of Alnwick Castle from an obscure position I noticed when driving to visit friends at the castle gardens earlier in the week. I stopped in a lay-by just over the main bridge into Alnwick village, and I walked back over the bridge to an open field with this view of the magnificent castle. It reminded me very much of a John Constable painting with the very rich colours of the evening sunset across the english countryside. That was my inspiration for this shot. The two sheep in the near the river Aln (running through Alnwick below the castle) on this side really set the scene.
Alnwick Castle has a wonderful history. It’s the second largest inhabited castle in England, and has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. This year has seen their 700 year anniversary. “The earliest mention of Alnwick Castle in the history books appears soon after 1096 when Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected the earliest parts of the castle. Alnwick Castle was one of the first homes in the North East to have electricity. Run by a recently restored hydro electric system installed in 1889, there was enough power produced to run 100 electric lamps.”

This is a HDR image combining 7 bracketed shots using Photomatix Pro for Macs. Adjustments in lighting and contrast were made using the enhanced details tool.
