"Stacked Up"
Whilst out with some friends on a day visit to Murton Park, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire (England), which houses the Yorkshire Museum of Farming, amongst other attractions, we enjoyed the brilliantly built replica of a Dark Ages / Viking settlement which is another of the museum’s main attractions. The work that has gone into the historical accuracy is astounding. The site contains many replicas of homes and social gathering places, built to accuracy according to available historical and archeological information. This shot is of the wood stack sitting just outside of the main hall where the village members would have gathered together to have meetings, and use this as a social venue. It was much like a pub or even a church might be today. It was the social centre, and always had a fire burning which is why they had such a large pile of wood on hand. I love the textures of the wood here. Extreme sunlight meant that the shadows under the eaves was strong, so that is why I chose to shoot it as a HDR image.
This is a HDR image combining 7 bracketed shots using Photomatix Pro for Macs. Slight adjustments in lighting and tone were done using the enhanced details tool. I have left the image unadjusted. As HDR images go, this is “As Is.”

Very nice! the HDR has tamed the strong sunlight. Interesting how little has changes since that time… you still find more or less the same log piles and huts in scouting camps and army camps around the world (although not necessarily with a thatched roof!)

That is so true. There are just some practicalities that have remained the same throughout the centuries. Thank you so very much my friend. I am learning new uses for the HDR process everyday.

As always beautiful shot Shawn. I always love reading the little bits of history you find about the places you shoot!

I bet it did. Thank you greatly my dear friend. I appreciate it sooooo much. I do have a photo of the inside of the hall, but I am not sure whether or not I should put it up.
