Winter Storm Warning – It is early morning on this day, 11-22-2011. I am not entirely sure exactly why I have the regional weather forecast as my homepage..Lake Ozonia and the immediate surrounding area has its own micro-climate. Well I know why the forecast interests me so much…because I am an avid trout fisherman and at this time of year, I am hoping to squeeze in another day of fishing on Lake Colby with predictions of temperatures in the mid-40’s or better and NO perceptible wind. The lower the wind speeds predicted the lower the acceptable fishing temperature. At this time of year, the sun never gets too high in the sky (It went South with the Cardinals. :)), but it still feels so warm and comforting on my face and gloveless hands on cloudless days. So as the sun began to brighten the upper levels of the sky causing the coldest air to sink toward the ground and make the western shoreline visible to me, I could see the opportunity for a photograph. The coldest temperatures of the Fall were recorded in our area overnight, and right now the digital thermometer read 15 degrees F. With no wind, the cold air descending upon the lake was causing both steam to rise slowly from the water and a thick, beautiful layer of white frost to form on the leafless deciduous trees and still green conifers along the shoreline. As I walked down to my dock with cameras and tripods…still in my pj’s (Nikki, my pet Yorkie, looked at me like maybe she should start barking to see if an ambulance could come with a straight jacket..ha,ha), I could hear geese still on the water. This time of year…beautiful morning like today…geese should be long gone…getting in as many miles as possible on their journey south. That is when it hit me….I know why they are still here…Winter Storm Warning!!! I will even do better than that…this storm is coming from the South :))). If it were coming from the North…East…or West…the geese would be just V’s in the sky. But with a storm coming from the South….no sense bucking the wind….might as well just hang at the lake….sure it might snow..but the lake water is warm…the snow will melt…the winds subside… Gee, don’t they know it is Thanksgiving on Thursday?? Don’t they have a favorite cornfield they have to get to??…ha,ha. Silly humans!
