As a young boy, my friends and I spent many days exploring the woods on the backside of Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake, NY. The better known side of Mount Pisgah faces the Adirondack Mountain Range and was where many a fine alpine skier learned their moves…first on the smaller hill with the tow rope doing the snow plow and then the larger (which seems so small now) hill with the T-bar. The backside of the small mountain was always my fave though and now it is no longer untouched forest. It has been purchased and developed with paved roads and expensive houses…some looking out over the village of Saranac Lake, others out toward Lower Saranac Lake, some toward the small hamlet of Bloomingdale with the Saranac River meandering in the foreground, and still others get to gaze out toward Lake Colby. As I made the turn to drive up Mt. Pisgah this Fall through the housing development, at first I was sad, but as my engine began to work harder and I continued to climb looking out over huge expanses of the Adirondack State Park, I fell in love all over again and began to look for signs. Oh, not the glorious signs of Fall….but signs that read “Lot For Sale”.
