It is 5 below zero outside with a stiff breeze to make it feel much colder. It is trying so hard to snow, but with such cold temperatures, the flakes are tiny..more like annoying ice crystals. The sun is trying to brighten up the day through a thin layer in the clouds off to the Southwest. It is one of those days that justifies spending crazy money on fancy moisture-wicking undergarments. It may be cold, but the driveway has 6 new inches of snow to be cleared and the woodbox is getting low. Yes, one of those days that reassures me that I was correct all those years when I taught my biology students, “Feathers did not evolve for flight, but as modified or mutated reptilian scales that became useful for insulation to conserve body heat as the climate became colder. Mammals with their hair..birds with their feathers…niches opened up…how cool it was to be warm!!”
This blue jay doesn’t seem bothered at all by the cold…but me…I think I will stay home today and there probably is enough wood inside to last until tomorrow. And on a day like today…this comforter works better than a dozen red roses, a box of fine chocolates, and dinner at a favorite restaurant on Valentine’s Day. :))
