Russian Gusli Player by

I noticed this Russian Gusli Player when I was in St. Petersburg last. The gusli is one of the oldest musical instruments that have played an important role in the Russian music culture. The Greek historians Theophylact Simocatta and Theophan were the first to mention the gusli: Under the war in the end of the 6th Century, the Greeks took Slavonic prisoners and found a musical instrument named the gusli. This corresponds to what the Arabic authors Al-Masudi and Ibn-Dasta told in the 10th Century AD

About Jon Ayres

I’m an American who has been living in Moscow since 2003. I enjoy discovering and photographing the many new things unheard of in the west in Russia, Ukraine and Crimea. Moscow is my second home and I love it and the people as much as I do back home. Russia is a fantastic country that should not be missed by those who like to travel.
