On March 6th 2009 I visited Venice for a day-trip with friends. While walking around, shopping souvenirs and so on, we passed this small canal bridge, and I noticed this guy who was in this exact position pictured here. He was cool when I turned back to ask him, pointing at my camera ’’ can I ? ’’, just nodding his head, then resuming his original position as shown, gazing into some distant place….This was my spontaneous meeting with a Venetian Gondolier, and resulted in this shot, which I would not consider a posed shot, as this is this fellow’s natural demeanor, this is him in his natural state. Some of my other shots have been posed, but this is not one of them. It was pure life. And it was my first visit to Venice.

Beautiful image Nedim!
Great work. Whiled ‘posed’ the image retains its charm. Great colours and pov
Wow great shot Nedim. Excellent concept, composition and colors.
LOL Looks really very arranged at the first glance :)) Well, so it is almost a candid photo…, but the result is excellent. I really thought this is a piece from a professional advertising shooting or something similar :))
Very well done.
PS. Maybe the man was a professional model and you did not know? Who knows…
Because, what he is doing, is a pose, and a very good one…
:))
Awesome shot Nedim!!!! This is such a winner, and I think the point you make above is summed up that this Gondolier is a natural-born poser, rather than this shot having been posed. He is a wonderful subject!!!
Most welcome!
And especially in Italy Hihi… and especially a gondolier… :)) I think almost any italian man is a natural poser (and any gondolier) LOL
But this one is really good :))) Isn’t he LOL
I say that he is a model waiting for his chance and in the meantime he is jobbing as a gondolier
My theory… Hihi… :))
Who knows
I think you can see how describing not only the technical details , but the circumstances surrounding the taking of a shot creates more interest. Thanks for your explanation!! Cheers Judy 101
It is a splendid candid portrait Nedim, beautiful work.
