From among the last shots of the famous turtle, Lonesome George. He was actually discovered in 1972 on the small island Pinta, by a Hungarian researcher Jozsef Vagvolgyi, as a last one of his species Geochelone nigra abingdoni. On the island Pinta, goats have destroyed its natural environment. Lonesome George was then transferred in 1972 to the Charles Darwin Research Center at Galapagos. Since 1993, several and unsuccessful attempts have been made to breed him with some other sub-species of giant tortoises. He was found dead on Sunday, June 24 by Fausto Llerena, who took care of him in the past 40 years.
