Hadrian’s Wall built by the Roman Empire across the width of
what is now northern England.
Begun in AD 122, during the rule of emperor Hadrian,
The Wall marked the northern lines in Britain and also the most heavily fortified border in the Empire.
It was built to prevent military raids on Roman Britain by the Pictish tribes (ancient inhabitants of Scotland) to the North.
In addition to its use as a military fortification, it was believed at the time, North of the wall marked the end of all known civilization,
