A study in Zen – life drawing meditation, ink and water. 1 minute.
From a series of experiments of “letting go” (of the ego) in creating, and freeing oneself from the “inner critic”, achieved by being as loose as possible and giving up control to allow for “mistakes”. (Exercises I use for this include: using very quick poses from the model; using unpredictable brushes; drawing with my left hand; continuous line; drawing without checking my work; and even drawing with my eyes closed.)

this is awesome how did you do this?

  • Thank you, I did it at a life drawing session during a series of 1 minute poses by the model. First I applied water to the paper with a paintbrush, and then I drew a very quick, rough figure with a stick dipped in ink. The water makes the ink bleed and creates a nice effect :)

    still really still image

  • “Still” is a very interesting word to describe it, I study Zen and I see drawing as a type of meditation… I definitely think the most honest and successful works are a product of the achievement of “stillness”; when the mind/self becomes free of it’s chatter and “story”, and is open to experience the moment, when the ego becomes an illusion, which allows for complete and utter freedom of expression in the truest sense. Thank you, Nik.

    Very interesting

  • Thanks, I am finding it very interesting that this particular image seems to atract the most attention out of all my other work here. I’m not sure why exactly… but I think I might go and re-evaluate some of my other fast, rougher sketches!

    oh nice… quite deep :D

  • Much appreciated! Despite it’s lack of detail, I feel as though I was able to capture some of the essence of my wonderful model in this drawing… which can be quite challenging in these one minute poses!
    :)
