Most people don’t even notice the ‘New’ in Times New Roman these days. Helvetica’s been around for a good while (1957), but the Times newspaper was using ‘Times New Roman’ for over 20 years (1931) when this font hit the world.
The formality of type and popularity serif fonts has been broken down since that time and accelerated with the advent of the web, where print became screen. Times ‘may’ be easy to read, but most people don’t ‘like’ it like they do Helvetica. :)
Maybe, like Arial it’s got Helvetica Envy
