Search by product type, search for groups, people and search forums from anywhere in Redbubble by Matt Simner

If you use Firefox with Redbubble and you’d like to be able to search by product type, search for people or search the forums from anywhere within Redbubble read on… If you don’t use Firefox – I’d thoroughly recommend it!! :)

UPDATE: 14/05/2009 – Amended to fit the new bubble interface with a slightly different link
UPDATE: 05/02/2009 – Bug fixed where my code interfered with RB functionality like replying to comments and zooming images. All sorted I think. Just uninstall (Tools—>GreaseMonkey—>Manage User Scripts) and download again. :)

After creating a few little helper scripts for the bubble I’ve created a new one that allows you to use the standard search box (found on every page) and filter your search without having to search, then filter. Some searches are also only possible from within the relevant area, such as groups and forums. I realised through doing this that it was also possible to search specifically for people.

What you get
You’ll see a little link appear next to the search box on every page. Clicking it brings up a simple box to select what you want to search on – like so :

You then just enter your search item as normal and click search. Simple!

Installation

  1. First of all you’ll need GreaseMonkey (a FireFox addon that runs scripts to manipulate existing web sites).
  2. “*Download the script from userscripts.org It should prompt you to install
  3. Refresh your page and Search Away!

NOTE: When you click the ‘close’ link or refresh the page it will reset the search back to ‘everything’. I could probably persist some settings, but thought I’d keep it as simple as possible.

Hopefully this gives the RB Dev guys some thoughts on how they can implement something for everyone :)

You can find more RB GreaseMonkey goodness here .

thanks a lot Matt, great work! :D

  • Matt Simner:

Thanks Wil – found a bug though (clashing with some RB code) so will post an update as soon as fixed…. :)

  • Matt Simner:

FIXED! – well should be. Don’t want to bore you with the technical details but my code had an argument with RB code and little things like replying to comments or zooming images don’t work with the first version.

Everything should be fine if you download and install again. :)
