Babalu-Aye (A Study For The Orishas Collection)
In the religious system of Orishaworship, Babalu-Aye is the spirit of illness and disease. In Cuba, he has been syncretized with Saint Lazarus.
He governs epidemics and heals infectious diseases. Though originally associated with smallpox, many of today’s worshippers appeal to Babalu-Aye for healing from HIV/AIDs.
Sources tell us he walks on crutches — or possibly carries them. He also has two dogs. To snif out infection?
He will do his best against infections and epidemics. But like most doctors, Babalu-Aye is very overworked and understaffed. However, he will not say no to offerings of white wine and popcorn.

Wow I love to read your side bar.. so very interesting to view the magic and worship eleswhere.. and the art you create is simply AMAZING..!!!!
Danilo Lejardi replied
Hi, yes I´ve also heard that this Orisha can be compared with Sitala or Mariamman, both Hindu goddesses of smallpox and disease. So they´re elsewhere. Thanks for your kind words.

Wonderful creation Danilo!! Also love to learn about others beliefs!!
I think I’ve read a short story before about Babalu-Aye, by Neil Gaiman, and the reason he uses the crutches is that he actually takes the sickness upon himself to cure those afflicted!! :)
Danilo Lejardi replied
Yes, it´s hard to know the origins of some things related to these characters. That´s why I avoid on being too specific. Thanks, i´m taking your info for future versions.

Oh I’m so glad I looked more than once! I liked the character at first sight, and the way he is integrated with the background. But now I discovered the eyes in the background, and the reflections in the eyes.. what will I discover in the next viewing…
Danilo Lejardi replied
Just keep looking; thanks, friend.
