desert gums - work in progress

as a few people know i have been working on a series on the colours etc in the australian gum trees using the real colours from them (as in matching the colours from a spectrometer)
i usually get stick samples from each of the trees but i am having trouble with this one as it is from the north west of victoria near the great sandy desert, and i so want to get samples of this! usually i can get them from one of the 3 botanic gardens in the sydney area, but i’ve had trobs with this and the murray river gum too, (which i exagerated the colours in for a bit of fun- i won’t be putting sticks on that one!)
for those who don’t know , i basically document the trees and then recreate them in their simplest forms, using recycled materials, even the canvas and stretchers and sum of the paints!

A great process of working Steve. Very organic, very respectful and environmental. You regard these trees with such devotion..like a botanist gazing adoringly at a big, ugly beetle he’s never seen before!! Hope the gum trees will be ok. Is there an opinion about climate affecting these plants?

  • bodymechanic replied

fanx steve , it has a lot to do with salinity getting in2 the water from all of the chemicals upstream, these are actually on the edge of the great sandy desert with it’s rich red orange sands!
