16 november 2012

…returning ‘home’ on their southerly migration to the cooler waters of the antarctic – for the first time,
this humpback whale calf weighing around 3-5 tonne (after being born in the warmer waters of the northern pacific) was cruising down the eastcoast,
calf and mother came in quite close to the village of Bicheno, on the eastcoast of Tasmania Friday 16 Nov 2012, and thankfully one of the locals came in to work to tell me the whales were in close to shore and playing,
after spending around 4 hours crossing Waubs Bay from Diamond Island, a couple of people had come into work and said there were whales playing just off the points. thankfully the boss let me take off, and they were swimming out of Waubs Bay and around Peggys Point,
so i got set up in a favourite little bay they like jumping around in….and soon enough they swum around the rocks and reefs which they apparently love rubbing against……..then mother and calf both breeched twice within 30 metres of the shore,
they then rounded the northern point of Governor Island and proceeded to keep playing as they passed around the island, then came in close again at Alligator Rocks at the southern end of The Gulch….
