…shot from as low to the flat surface as I could get, without disturbing proceedings, or the camera. I got what I wanted, from years of photographing sand mandalas, I always look for the wild side of the moment…

Canon 5D 24-105mm f4L @ 105mm
f4 1/200 ISO50 hand held indoor

….this is public sand mandala…that anyone can view – without intitiation into a tantric practice…the gyuto monks often travel and prepare the ground and surroundings for HH Dalai Lamas’ visits and teachings…there is a group of monks that have been resident in australia for a few years now, they even did a gig at the afl grand final a few years back….

    this looks amazing Tim!

  • thanks bindi, i’m always looking for new angles and light as these beautiful creations are being built, they can take up to 14 days for the most intricate, and the stages (such as seen here) of the construction – grain by grain, are amazing to witness

    Great shot and perspective, Tim.
I’m on a beach in Thailand right now… today taught three youngmen how to ‘dribble’ a sand castle… not quite the same thing… but sand… and for me sun burn! ;-)))

  • thanks James, a perfect moment with the mandala in its initial stages, and space around it, and an awesome shaft of lift coming in across the platform….which island are you on ?? enjoy !

yes, they really are something to see…
