the people | two weeks in a remote himalayan valley
His Holiness the Dalai Lama was visiting a region of northern himachal pradesh, on the indo-tibet border.
this was the first time HH had visited some of the spiti lahaul valley and pin valley, and there was a huge crowd gathering daily, with the added security of a border area, slowing down the process.
people came from everywhere, by the thousands, any way they could – on foot, horse, bus, car and 4wd taxi. the transport could not keep up as we visited four monasteries in three distinct and separate valleys.
with so many tribal groups gathered, it was incredible once in a life time experience. there were bhutanese dancers mixing with armed soldiers. whole villages of people from the upper kullu area. ladakhi traders and goat herders, passing down through the valleys on their annual seasonal pilgrimage and trading routes.
these valleys are over 4000m above sea level, at their base, the receive massive snowfalls, but very little rain, making them arid, almost desert like landscapes.

…i’ve split this calendar into two, the place and the people. i don’t think it is possible to do justice to this event, with just twelve images…
