Gazing over the cliff tops....For nothing now

His life taken
all joy is gone
everthing is lost

our hearts stabbed
searing pain
too much to take

standing together
gripped your hand
last time connected

I catch your eye
but you are gone
we turn away

decision made
no words spoken
looking upwards
one step is taken…

Gazing over the cliff tops....For nothing now by

I saw this picture Gazing over the cliff tops…. by Wigs and it reminded me of a very sad and thought provoking news story I saw recently in the UK where a couple committed suicide after their much loved handicap son died very young. They had him in a bag with them when they died. As a parent I still cannot even begin to comprehend how they must have felt. Very, very sad and moving story.

Made a connection also with the words of W. H. Auden
’Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.’

    Very sad… I can imagine how hard it is to lose a child. My prays go out to the family that is now in heaven.

    Powerful words and imagery evoked Bob. The poem by Auden sums it up also.

  • Auden’s words really touched me, the first time I heard them.

    Your words put me right there on that cliff, heavy with emotion and a knot in my throat.
    Well done!

    Hi Bob, the said cliff in my image was beachy head where this couple took their lives…. its a very sad place. When i was there i sat on a bench in memory to another couple who too had taken thier lives together … you have portrayed the mood superbly. Wigs

    Such a sad story…and the all-consuming grief that must have been to bring them there.

  • I know. Un-imaginable grief.
