Villain and Hero

The hero, the villain
the patient, the intolerant
the gentle, the violent
the passionate, the disinterested
the wise, the unknowing
the generous, the mean of spirit
the sensitive, the beligerant
the expert, the critic
the master, the apprentice
the rule bender, the my way
the grey, the black and white
the take time, the can’t make time

the contradiction

The craftsman, my father.

Villain and Hero by

My father was a very skilled carpenter but he has never been to transfer those skills to fatherhood. Such a contradiction. Half of me looks up to my father and the other half hates him.

Nice piece Bob. I believe that most of us are contradictions in various ways, just that for some the gulf is wider than for others. It is very difficult for a child to understand this however, and much pain is felt when the contradictions pile up. I’m still sorting out how I feel about my parents contradictions, while I also endeavour to address my own! Good food for thought, thanks and keep on writing – I look forward to the next journey:-)

  • I have no uncertainty of my own contradictions, which I struggle to improve every day. My dad was 50 before he outwardly acknowledged his. Too late? Time will tell.

Another poem written from the heart. I believe all human beings have theses characteristics….but most people grow up and their personality develops or evolves into something greater (away from selfishness/super ego)…..it’s unfortunate that he did not.

  • My dad was 50 before he outwardly acknowledged his. Too late? Who knows.

Ahh, beautiful! I think all of us are contradictory, sadly. And we always fail to see it. This is a wonderful piece of writing, so heartfelt, I really enjoyed it. I hope you keep writing!! =]

  • Thanks for your generous comments. I intend to continue writing but it was a struggle to get this one out.

like so many parents, Its hurtful for children when the skill at work becomes the escape from the family. Lovely piece.

  • Thanks skinnyman. Very generous comment.

Wow…. I know what you mean.

  • It seems to be a fairly common situation. All of us are trained for work but receive no training for parenthood.
