Eastern Newt on Forest Floor by Robert Miesner

Available to buy on…

This is the Red Eft Stage of the Eastern Newt. Which is the middle stage of development of three. The other two stages the salamander is completely aquatic while at this middle stage they are terrestrial. They can remain in this stage for two or three years. As you can see by the bright colors also, they are poisonous to predators and after one has tried to eat one of these salamanders they will never do it again. You can see these guys on the moist ground during forest walks as I did with this one.

This was taken in Cortland NY.

Great capture and description – I have always been facinated by newts – although have never seen one – we do no thave them down under- what is the 3rd stage? – thanks for sharing

  • Thanks for your comment John! In the third stage they transform into an adult. They have a more greenish color and their tail flattens out becoming a great rudder in water. Then most will live out the rest of their life in fresh water ponds and lakes.
