This shot was almost complete guesswork and much harder than I thought it would be. But then again, I’m a dumbass. The camera is on the tripod firmly planted in the mush filled lake bed, the photographer is flat up against an almost completely vertical rock cliff that the water runs right up to. Unfortunately the coolest shot was with the camera just above the water smack dab in the middle of the rock wall, about 20 feet in. My boots pointed straight down at the water, gripping the rock, my back firmly planted against the wall that has no floor. The framing was all guesswork as I had no flip up screen, and putting my eye to the viewfinder would have turned this description into slapstick comedy. I would reach my hand down very slowly to change up the exposure and with every click of the wheel I would feel my feet slip just a little, inching ever closer to the water. Since I was shooting into sunset I decided I would just run the gamut on exposures and HDR the shot later on. This, of course, involved quite a few clicks of that wheel and quite a few inches closer to the water, but I got the shot and was happy with it on review later when I got back to level rock. I know what you’re saying,“Hey that was a pretty normal story for Bob”, and you’re right, and I’m glad you feel comfortable using my first name as though we’ve known each other since Junior High School.
Oh, did I mention that while I was pleased with the results I had gotten, it occurred to me that a landscape orientation might work better. So, I did it all over again, but I was wrong. The portrait orientation was better. Maybe I’m not such a dumbass after all.
