Persian Gulf Haiku

In the spirt of a Haiku (3 lines of poetry, 1 with 5 syllables, then 7, then 5) I wrote this poem. It was therapy for me.. I had been afloat on a US Navy Aircraft Carrier for about 5 months when I wrote it.

dripping sweat stings eyes
polite thank yous, profane talk
roar of jets jolt you

no change in view
predictable ground hog day
hot water constant

missing lover’s touch
waiting at home for daddy
laughter of children

smiling captain’s call
weary sailors exercise
gently moving deck

bravest of men toil
crowded smells shock nose and mind
sleep now if you can

ladders up and down
short tempers, standing in line
girls play roles of men

mind the watch and pray
dirty foe meets brush and mop
quickdraw sailors run

asbestos dreamer
liberty call beckons me
love from home sustains

hard labor ruled in
love of country bright as day
patriot’s hammer strikes
