I’m surprised I haven’t asked this before, but can you describe your process for something like this (i.e., is it spontaneous & instinctual, trial & error, what in your mind determines the composition & elements, etc.)? I realize that if someone asked me this question I’m not sure I could answer it, but…

Hi Alan, I would say that all three of the suggestions you made could apply to the way that I work, it can differ form piece to piece. Saying that I am slowly moving towards a practice that is less spontaneous and more considered, I like the idea of having a certain amount of freedom within a decisive framework. My work is definitely process led, by that I mean my first choices are that of medium and materials, these are the things that lead the work and dictate the ‘image’. Usually before I start a piece I have a a finished image in my mind, although this image is never clear, I try to work towards realising that image.
By the way have you had any thoughts about the exhibition Graham suggested?

I echo that comment from Alan Jai, also I think a comment Doreen made recently was really pertinent about how youre inventing your own language symbolism

  • Thanks josh, yes I liked that comment. A quote from Rauschenberg keeps repeating itself inside my head, something about taking drawing into the white. This is something I am working towards.

Thanks for the insight, Jai, & it sounds as if our methods are quite similar, although I never have a finished image in mind when I start, the process gradually starts to determine the image.

Also I haven’t heard anything about an exhibition, haven’t received anything from Graham.

  • I saw an interview with the artist Agnes Martin, she said that she never starts to paint without inspiration. She states that she has no ideas of here own but waits for inspiration to guide her. She also said that the problem with a lot of artists is that although they have inspiration, before they can get it down they have have 50 other ideas that get in the way. This made me think about my own practice. I realised that I often start out with an image in mind which gets distorted through the process of making. And usually results in something that I am unhappy with.
I am sure that I noticed a comment or reply from Graham asking you if you were interested, check you comments.
